The story
Distilled Gin is the result of the evolution of gin distillation techniques, which, since the 19th century, sought to perfect the purity and finesse of the final product. While London Dry Gin has established itself as the standard for dry gin, distilled gin has taken a more refined and delicate approach, distilling the neutral spirit along with the botanicals to extract only the purest and clearest aromas.
This technique allows for a gin with more subtle and less aggressive aromatic profiles, ideal for those seeking a versatile spirit with a sophisticated character.
How is distilled gin made?
Distilled Gin is produced from a neutral alcohol, usually from grains, with a minimum alcohol content of 37.5%, as required by European regulations. Its unique feature is that the neutral alcohol is redistilled along with all the botanicals used, in traditional stills.
This process allows for the essential oils and scents of the botanicals to be extracted very cleanly and delicately, without adding flavorings or sugars after distillation. Juniper berries must still be present, but the flavor profile can be more balanced and less pronounced than London Dry.
What are the distinctive features of a distilled gin?
Compared to London Dry Gin and flavoured gins , distilled gin is distinguished by:
- Softer and more refined flavour profile: Distilling with botanicals allows for a more delicate extraction than the post-distillation infusion typical of London Dry.
- No added sugars or flavours: As with London Dry, the addition of artificial sugars or flavours after distillation is prohibited.
- Less pronounced juniper flavour: Although juniper is still present, its aroma can be less dominant than in London Dry, leaving room for more complex notes from the other botanicals.
- Greater aromatic transparency: The result is an elegant gin suitable for palates seeking delicacy without sacrificing complexity.
